Even My Dog Has a Blankie!

Riley with his favorite blanket

My Aloha Friday Question is this:

Did you have a childhood attachment, like a “security” blanket, a pacifier, a bottle, or a special bear you couldn’t part with?

From the loveable Linus eternally dragging his blanket to that maddening Maggie Simpson sucking on her pacifier with every breath, a child’s need for a comfort item seems to be universal. What sort of character were you? If you can’t remember or think you had no special comfort thing, what about your own children?

Me, I had a bottle. I actually have no memory of being attached to my bottle; I only know from old photographs showing in stark black and white my chubby little hands clutching what must have been my soothing object. Plus, my big sister says so.

Blankie! I still have mine, actually my oldest has it. My middle child still uses her blankie, as does my son.

Nothing stands out, but I did love my stuffed animals and still have them. :)

Heather, that is so sweet. I have a dear friend, she must be 35 years old, who still has her blankie (her “rubby”).

Audra Marie, I loved my stuffed animals, too. I forgot to mention these – I think in my young years, up to about age 10 or so, my stuffed animals were very dear and always slept with me.

I have a teddy bear who has been with me for 45 years. It went everywhere including my honeymoon! When it got so threadbared my mom put it in a shadow box. I cried because I couldn’t touch it anymore. My DH went out and bought me another bear, Patches.

I just knew our son would want a teddy bear but he ended up with a plastic alligator called Alex.

Terri Sue, that’s got to be some kind of record!! And WHAT is your son thinking – anything plastic just doesn’t seem cuddle-worthy. :-)

that picture is so cute. I don’t think I do have a childhood attachment

Ohh…so cute. My Little jewel has a blanket…he calls it ’3 picutre blanket’ b/c daaa ..it has a picture of pooh, tiger and piglet along the bottom.
HOw is became 3 picture and not pooh or blankie…or whatever is a mystery to me.

    Happy Friday!

    Good shot of your dog!

I was a thumb-sucker… with my satin edged blanket. When I was five a was sent to a week of French immersion camp, and the blankets weren’t bound. Viola, I was cured!

    Cute photo!

My brother was the blankey baby. I had a favorite pillow, and I still am particular about my pillows, and my first stuffed teddy bear, I still have it. I carried it around with me everywhere I went.

BTW~I recieved the book. Thank you so much. The kids and I are going to really have fun with it.

I dont think I had anything.

I had a blanket that I vaguely recall. When I was 13, a good friend died in a car accident. The day before his funeral I got a stuffed teddy bear and slept with that for years. I still have it in rubbermaid box in my closet.

I don’t remember having anything my self-but my girls both have blankies and they are in middle school! Their first blankies were those woven kind-and when they started teething they pulled the threads out into long loops-we were afraid they would choke themselves or each other. Then we went to normal blankets one made by Granny one made by a dear lady who is no longer with us. Granny’s hasn’t held up as well as the other ladies-but she had another just like it that she kept begging my daughter to just “replace” it with. None of that was going to happen-so we finally convinced my daughter to let Granny sew the new one to the old one. This was just last year! So yes I have two middle school girls who will not sleep or even watch t.v. without their blankies! I know some folks who think you should take things like that away-but not me. I say enjoy them till your married someday-and then just take them with you!

Anne and Mrs. Darling, well, you two are probably just very confident, independent women!

Kelley, I love the “3 picture blanket” – it’s cute how he calls it that. I’ll bet you have a spatial/math mind on your hands.

e-Mom, goodness, I forgot to mention the thumb!! The great attached comforter. I was never a thumb sucker, but my hubby was, and one of my kiddos was. Two of my kids loved the binkie too. Your satin edged blanket sounds cozy. I hope you don’t have bad memories of the French immersion camp as a result of the blankie being taken away!

AreWeThereYetMom, I love the pillow thing. You can always safely cuddle a pillow even at age 30 or 40 and no one will blink an eye. :-) I’m glad you like the book!

Jen, that’s tragic about your friend. I’m sure that your bear will always be a special item and I’m glad it didn’t get lost over the years.

Tipper, I love your story!! Your middle school girls sound precious, and I agree, enjoy the blankies until they’re worn to threads. I can’t believe you sewed the old blanket to the new one – this is some serious blankie stuff!

I like your dog! It seems I have a real live cat drooped over me in most of my childhood pics- I am not a cat person now, but apparently, I was then!

I dont remember having anything. My husband and son were both attached to the blankets with the silky edge. They liked to rub their fingers along the silk. I love that picture of your dog with his blanky.

My mom said I had a favorite pillow when I was young. I couldn’t sleep without it so whenever we were on a trip, she always brought the pillow with us.

BTW, I think it’s so cute that your dog has a blankie.

  18. Deborah May 3rd, 2008 at 2:50 pm

    I had a blankie…it was pink!

  19. kailani May 4th, 2008 at 8:00 am

I was attached to my pacifier. My parents would always get into arguments whenever they couldn’t find it. ;-)

My dog (a yellow lab) has his own blankie too!
