My Elk Hunt and Shoot

When I shoot elk, it’s with a camera. There’s a gorgeous herd across the field, at least two hundred of them, that I see everyday (and spy through the binoculars), and of late have been hearing in the early morning and late evening - have you ever heard an elk bugle? Wow, it’s nature’s music. Well, they are currently in “the rut,” and there is great purpose in their frenzy of bugling.

Several days ago, my neighbor let me drive up as far as I could on their property to try to capture the herd. Sorry to say, I do NOT have a camera with a powerful telephoto lens, otherwise you’d be seeing several bulls with enormous racks; as it is, you see specks in a field. I thought about trying to sneak up on the elk to get a closer shot, but these are wise creatures. They were very aware of our presence even from a distance, and stampeded away from us shortly after I snapped this picture.

Elk Herd

I just had the girls with me, and my little darlings were absolutely as excited as I was with the captivating sight. My 6 year old has even mastered an elk call - thanks to Will Primos hunting videos.

The Girls on a Country Fence

We were bewitched by the elk, but the view of this valley from up here was simply enchanting on its own. Our house is one of those little white spots in the distance.

I’ll use this post as my entry for Sprittibee’s giveaway:

“I’m entering the Fall Five Kodak Printer Give-Away at Sprittibee’s Blog. Kodak and Sprittibee are giving away an EasyShare 5300 printer!”

I would really love to print out all the photos I’ve been accumulating on my computer and begin an album for the family. There’s nothing quite like a collection of photos in your hands that you can flip through and set out on the coffee table.

Amazing place you live! I love the glow from the time of day you shot the photos! Great job!

You’re stories, observations, and pictures are amazing (and your kids seem to be having a great time). Thanks for sharing it all.

Sprittibee, thanks - the glow was pretty, I must say. :-)

Jane, the girls on the fence is my favorite. It’s funny because one is dressed in a summer dress and the other has a winter hat and pants. This actually reflects their natures; the one wants to wear a t-shirt and shorts year-round, and the other is always cold.

Robert, thank you! We do have fun, especially if we’re outside. I need to remind myself when I’m having a difficult day with the kids that all we need to do is go outside and find an adventure.

I do regular scrapbooking for myself, but for the grandparents (who don’t seem as interested), I make a photo book every year for Christmas. I use the Kodak website, but there are others. I have been very pleased. The quality is high and the shipping is amazingly fast. The grandparents look forward to that gift the most of all every year.

I try to wait until there is a 25% off promotion, and then I can get the photo books delivered for about 25$ each.

It’s fun to have something that looks so professional!

Who needs a telephoto lens? The cutest creatures in the wild are right near you on the fence rails!

    :-)

I love how you captured the afternoon(?) glow in the photo of the girls.

In my opinion, that photo of your two girls on the fence is a winner! Great shot! Nice lighting. Hugs, e-Mom

Karen, great idea for a Christmas gift for the grandmas! I’ve been wanting to do something like that; I’ll have to check into Kodak and other companies that offer that photobook and look for a deal.

K T Cat, good point, do I really need a telephoto lens? :-)

Grace & e-Mom, thanks, the photo of the girls seems to be a winner. This was within an hour of the sun setting, and those low sunbeams sure helped me out.
